Landry et al. showed that adherence to KD was statistically significantly lower than that of the MedDiet and a low-fat diet that was used in his study of diabetics . This diet became increasingly popular in the field of athletics when Phinney et al. published his study in 1983, stating that well-trained cyclists could sustain exercise capacity at submaximal capacity for 21–28 days while on the ketogenic diet . The only way that this is truly efficacious is if the primary macronutrient in the diet is fat, as even protein needs to be limited to limit the potential for gluconeogenesis. In this regard, Coffey and Hawley (2017) add that despite chronic studies indicating that there is robust evidence supporting that endurance training attenuates strength adaptations when concurrent training protocols are applied, the underlying mechanisms of the mentioned interference are unknown. This confirms that endurance training does not significantly modify the marks obtained by recreational endurance athletes in CMJ. Regarding ETG, despite the fact that endurance training effectively reduced BFP in some previous studies 38,44, we understand that subjects included in this group did not improve their BFP due to the absence of strength training, which implied that they could not benefit from its potential capacity to increase basal metabolism. In athletes, the absolute and relative increase in CO with exercise testing may be several-fold higher than in untrained individuals. To overcome these limitations of standard normal ranges for CPET, others have published their athlete-specific CPET findings, though the small size and athlete composition of these studies has limited their uptake for utilization in clinical practice in the care of athletes 17–19. For example, a symptomatic athlete may present with a supra-normal peak V̇O2 on CPET despite significant cardiac pathology due to training-related adaptations in all the other systems required to produce an exercise effort. Clinical incidence is a hybrid between the epidemiologic incidence proportion and the incidence rate in that it uses the number of injuries in the numerator but the number of athletes at risk in the denominator. It is a valid estimator of average injury risk, yet it is rarely used in sports injury epidemiology to communicate information about such risks to nonscientists. The epidemiologic incidence proportion is the number of injured athletes divided by the number of athletes at risk. It accounts for variation in exposure between athletes and teams and is widely used by researchers. For research purposes, the IR is preferred because it is a more accurate representation of the rate of injury based on time at risk. We all have a scientific responsibility to correctly report the incidence of specific sports injuries; however, it is equally important to interpret the chosen measure of incidence for the target audience. For example, it is extremely useful to know the probabilities of initial and subsequent injury in full-contact sports such as football and regarding commonly recurrent injuries such as concussions. As for the former, some authors demonstrated an improvement in vertical jump performance when participants used CHO-enriched integrators 53,54; moreover, this result was not confirmed on vertical leap by others 55,56,57. There was strong evidence for a negative association between symptoms of stress (measured by DALDA) and sustained performance (table 5). Between the POMS and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), there was strong evidence for a positive association with the vigour subscale and moderate evidence for a negative association with the fatigue subscale, which was also reflected by strong evidence for a negative association with total mood disturbance (table 5). Of the 64 remaining articles, 2 shared data with another article24–27 and so were combined and considered as a single data set in each instance.
